Andar BaharRecently, Arundhati Nag delivered the fourth ‘Spirit of Bangalore’ lecture on theatre at the Lady Jehangir Hall. She recalled her arrival in Bengaluru in 1979 when she had not yet learnt to speak Kannada. “Here I was, an actor who was doing 40 (theatre) shows in a month, sometimes in Bombay….of the languages I spoke, only English was performed at the time in Bangalore,” said Nag, who has gone on to perform extensively in Kannada, notably in plays written by Girish Karnad, among others.In an interview, the actor confessed that she doesn’t know exactly what the walk is called, because it’s not something she’s learnt as a Bharatnatyam dancer. She said that the walk was something that Bhansali asked her to do. Talking to Zoom, Aditi said, “I want to ask somebody, Sanjay sir, my dance teacher, what is it? Is it the Gajagamini walk, the swan walk? What walk is that I don’t know! I’ll say it was what Sanjay sir asked me to do. I followed Sanjay sir and what he told me. I know in Kathak there is Mayur chaal (peacock walk), then there is Gajagamini (walk of seduction), but I am sure it is in all the dance forms but I don’t know, I should find out.”
